Introducing Dayoff Intros
A better alternative to Reddit for finding genuine connections that last
We’re officially at the 2 month mark for Dayoff. 158 users! Honestly that is great for word-of-mouth marketing. I haven’t spent a dime yet on advertising this. I’m still reaching out to people and having interesting conversations about what people are looking for when it comes to making connections online, or friends IRL, or whatever.
When I started this project, I originally thought a feed would be the core feature of the app. Conversations branch off from your posts. And your posts are just something that’s on your mind, or your current mood. Conversations happen in the moment, so a chronological feed makes sense.
But today, i’m changing the rules a bit. I’m introducing Intros. Dayoff Intros are basically your profile’s calling card to introduce yourself, and the type of connection you’re looking for. On Reddit, if you’re ever looking for connections, you’ll see posts on /r/MakeNewFriendsHere or /r/InternetFriends (there’s a bunch of them) where people are just looking for chat. This has been one of my target audiences for marketing Dayoff. And what I’ve learned from chatting with many people on those subreddits is that people aren’t finding the connections they want. I wrote a little bit about this in my last Substack - Reddit is not a good tool for finding connections. But it seems to be one of the only options to find connections online! There’s very little trust on Reddit, because the whole premise is to remain anonymous. And so people continue to post and weed through anonymous messages to see if they can find a spark. The other main disadvantage to Reddit is that your post gets forgotten about. People end up posting again and again. And that’s just silly.
With Dayoff, you only have to post once. Your profile can do the talking. And you can get discovered. The goal here is to increase the chances of a genuine connection and conversation.
You already have a profile on Dayoff, so you don’t need to re-explain the basics about you.
You can filter the age and gender of those who are allowed to DM you.
You don’t have to re-post anything, like you do on Reddit.
So here’s the new rule: you can only post on the main feed if you have an Intro. The reason for this is: I want Dayoff to be a supportive community and not just another social feed. I want it to be a place you can go to where you’re putting yourself out there not because of social performance, but because you’re genuinely interested in meeting other people.
Intros require a minimum of 40 words. That’s it. Just a small paragraph explaining who you are. You can always edit it later.
So here it is, Dayoff Intros: https://dayoff.io/intros
I encourage you to share this if you’re out and about meeting people online and want to get to know them a bit better.
And, as always, I’m open to your feedback.
Thank you!
Alex
